Published January 23, 2008 05:08 pm - Stephen Biggers has a goal already established for Barren County. Biggers sets first goal as head of IDEA By BRAD DICKERSON Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — Stephen Biggers has a goal already established for Barren County.
Addressing a group comprised of city council and fiscal court members, as well as other local dignitaries, the newly announced executive director of the Glasgow-Barren County Industrial Development Economic Authority jovially exclaimed that he hopes to bring a Starbucks into the community. “I hope to lasso them in here,” Biggers said. Following the small reception, Biggers explained that the goal is one he is taking seriously. “I have already laid the groundwork for it and I’m not ashamed to put it out there,” he said. “I am going to do everything that I can. I can’t make any promises, but I am going to do everything that I can to bring a Starbucks here because, I tell you, if I can’t get my Starbucks I don’t make it well. “I’m going to work very hard to make that happen.” Biggers returns to Glasgow after working in Franklin, Tenn., for a number of years following four years as executive vice president of the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce, from 1989 to 1993. During his tenure, the chamber increased membership from 300 to nearly 800 in less than four years, according to his resume. After leaving the chamber, Biggers moved to Franklin, where he served as the vice president of recruiting for Journal Communications, an economic development publishing company, from 1993 to 1998. Since 1998, Biggers has been the operations manager and buyer for J.J. Ashley’s Fine Furnishings, a business he helped his wife, Lisa, start when they moved. “When I heard about this position, I felt like I was being called back home for a lot of reasons,” he said. “There are so many things that are in place right now that are going to be a tremendous asset for this community.” Biggers’ annual salary is $95,000, which shall be paid bi-monthly, according to information from IDEA. He will be in the office starting Feb. 1 and will start full-time by Feb. 19. “We had some outstanding candidates for this job,” said Steve Newberry, chairman of the IDEA board. “We advertised it nationally, we advertised it regionally, we advertised it locally and we went through a series of interviews. As we came through the process, there was one candidate that really seemed to be the right person, the right fit, the right credentials for this job.”
