IN MINUTES: Caverna Board of Education

By GINA KINSLOW
Glasgow Daily Times

GLASGOW

ACTION: The board of education took the following action: elected Wayne Hatcher as board chairman; elected Janey Stotts as board vice chairman; approved the meeting agenda; approved the minutes of the board’s Dec. 11 meeting; approved the treasurer’s report; approved consent items; approved orders of the treasurer; approved personnel report as presented by the superintendent; approved travel reimbursement from 49 cents per mile to 37 cents per mile; approved medical leave for Peggy Spann beginning Dec. 15 to Jan. 26; approved the 2009-10 draft budget; approved seasonal travel for the middle school boys basketball team; agreed to set board meetings for the second Thursday of each month; and approved physical activity and health and nutrition plan.

REPORTS: Board members heard reports from each principal in the district and from Dr. Sam Dick, superintendent, who noted that a bill has been prefiled in the state legislature to remove writing portfolios from the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System and replace it with testing writing on demand only. He also reported that he believed there had been a bill prefiled to abolish CATS. Dick also reported that all three schools in the district had been given new CATS baseline scores and will now have new testing goals to meet for the 2009-10 testing cycle. Dick also told board members that a school nurse is expected to begin work in the district soon. Penny Boeckmann, finance director, gave an update on Caverna Elementary School’s renovation project. Alisha Richardson, director of special education, gave a report on the year-end summary for students with disabilities.

ITEMS TABLED: Board members were scheduled to award an Employee Appreciation plaque to Caverna High School art teacher Casey Bates, but due to Bates not being able to attend the board meeting the board decided to table the item until its next board meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dick an-nounced that the Kentucky School Board Association Conference is set for the end of Jan. He also announced that the orientation meeting of the Facilities Planning Committee will be Jan. 15 at 7:15 p.m.
