Published October 16, 2008 10:02 am - Alcohol sales don’t seem to be lifting Glasgow’s economy Dear Editor,
I would like to make a few comments about the alcohol sales that are supposedly bringing new jobs to Glasgow. Last November, the pro alcohol advocates said voting “yes” means more choices and jobs. I guess if you own a restaurant in Glasgow, that may bring in more profit, but more jobs? Come on, what a scam that line was. The only jobs that alcohol sales will bring are part-time. People in Glasgow need full-time jobs with benefits to support their families. It is my understanding that the city purchased land for an industrial park. I hope the same individuals who pushed the alcohol sales so hard are putting the same amount of effort into filling up the vacant industrial park that probably came at the expense of hardworking taxpayers. Maybe it is time for a leadership change in Glasgow, one that actually puts forth more effort and new ideas to recruit industry. Perhaps we need to communicate with other cities to get better ideas for bringing jobs here. Someone might ask the city of Franklin how they got the electrical car plant to locate there. I bet they offered more than just alcohol sales. It may seem like I am just being sarcastic, but someone has to be more serious about getting jobs for the great citizens of this community. I just want to say I was born and raised in Glasgow and proud of it. I will be retiring from the military soon. My wife and I would like to come home to a flourishing community. Jobs are more important to us than an alcoholic drink with our meal. Randy Kingrey Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
