T’ville tourney raises funds

TAYLORSVILLE -- The first annual Taylorsville Hope Foundation Classic was held Saturday at Taylorsville High School featuring several local girls’ teams. The West Jones Lady Mustangs defeated North Forrest 71-23, and the South Jones Lady Braves lost to the Mendenhall Lady Tigers 55-47.

Lady Mustangs 71, Lady Eagles 23

The Lady Mustangs got on a 20-0 run with 3:23 left in the opening quarter when Kiara Speed hit a three-pointer. West Jones added six more points to close out the first quarter, outscoring North Forrest 26-4.

Demi Crosby sent the Lady Mustangs on a 16-2 run after a jumper in the lane to put the Lady Mustangs up 42-6. West Jones added one more bucket to close out the half to take a 44-8 lead.

With 3:47 left in the third quarter, Janetta McCullum hit two free throws to send West Jones on a 12-5 run. The Lady Mustangs took a commanding 60-15 advantage going into the final quarter.

In the final quarter West Jones outscored North Forrest opponent 11-8 to start the 2009-10 hoops campaign with a win.

Lady Mustang head coach Steve Gieger was pleased to get the season opening win. "It’s good to get that first one behind you," he said. "I thought the team showed great effort out there tonight."

Leading the way for the Lady Mustangs were Demi, with 16 points; Kiara Speed, 11; Chasity Jones, 9; Jameka Newell, 9; Anna Sumrall, 8; and Murphy Matthews, 8.

The Lady Mustangs host Sumrall Tuesday.

Lady Tigers , Lady Braves 47

With 27 seconds left in the first quarter, Keoshya Wilson hit a jumper in the lane to give the Lady Braves a 13-11 first quarter lead. With time expiring late in the second half, the Lady Tigers of Mendenhall went into the half with a 25-23 lead to close out a 6-0 run.

South Jones tied the game with 3:55 left in the third quarter when Wilson made both free throw attempts to tie the game at 32. 

Mendenhall regained the lead in the closing seconds of the third quarter to send the Lady Tigers on a 10-4 run , giving Mendenhall a 42-36 lead to end out the quarter.

In the final quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored South Jones 13-11.

Lady Braves head coach Sherri Cooley was pleased with her team's play. "I'm pleased with the effort of our team," she said. "I'm also proud of the way we competed.”
