Three area 2A football teams are in the first round of playoffs Friday. They are Mize, Taylorsville and Bay Springs.
Wesson at Mize
The Mize Bulldogs will host the Wesson Cobras Friday. Wesson comes in at 8-2 and the Bulldogs come in with a 7-3 mark.
"Wesson is a well disciplined team," said Mize coach Kenny Robinson. "They have a fullback that has over 1,000 yards rushing, plus their quarterback is a good one, and they have some big linemen."
Mize is coming off a loss to Taylorsville last Friday and is glad to be hosting the first playoff game. "We need to get an early lead on Wesson because they are a grind-it-out team,” Robinson said. “We need to put points up early and get ahead. Our defense also needs to step and play a good game for us this week, and we will need to throw the ball. We will need good decisions from our quarterback."
Hinds AHS at Taylorsville
The Taylorsville Tartars host Hinds AHS. The Tartars come in as the No. 1 seed in their region and Hinds comes in as the No. 4 seed in their Region.
"Hinds AHS has good team speed all over the field,” said Tartar coach Bud Blackledge. "Offensively, we will need to just take care of the ball. On defense, we need to run to the football and just tackle well, but it will take a total team effort from our guys to grab this game."
Bay Springs at Puckett
The Bay Springs Bulldogs will make the short trip up Highway 18 to take on the Puckett Wolves.
The two teams have met already this season as the Wolves took a 35-0 victory in the first week of the season.
The Wolves come in with a record of 9-1, and the Bulldogs come in with a record of 2-8.
