Glasgow seniors making most of final season

GLASGOW — Justin Stinson has built a strong basketball program at Glasgow High School. Since taking over as coach for the 2010-11 season, Stinson has guided the Lady Scotties to a record of 79-29, including a trip to the Sweet 16 basketball tournament.

And playing a big role in the Lady Scotties’ success over the years has been the program’s senior class. Stinson intentionally develops players in his program so that when they are seniors, they’re developed, experienced and battle tested. This year’s group, Shalika Smith, Emily Alexander, Ashley Smith and Hydeia Depp, is no exception.

“It is our players’ program and we try to create a culture where our kids take pride in being a Lady Scottie, and we try to create a culture of high expectations and we try to create a culture of players doing their job,” Stinson said. “Everyone’s job is different. Some players get more accolades and some players get more points, but everyone has a job to do. And every job is important, whether that is the player that gets a Division I scholarship or the player that comes in for only three minutes a game. We’re a team.

“From first day when we got here we preached team first. It doesn’t mean everyone takes the same amount of shots and it doesn’t mean everyone plays the same, team first means you put the team first before your individual wants and your individual needs.

“So, if it ever comes down to making a decision for the team or making a decision for an individual, that decision is already made. When you convey that message on a daily basis, it’s about being unselfish and playing together. If you can learn to be together for each when things are good, and be there for each other when things are bad, that’s going to serve you better in life.”

The GHS seniors will lead the Lady Scotties into this year’s All “A” Classic State Basketball Tournament in Frankforrt. Glasgow opens the tournament Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. CST with Louisville Holy Cross.

“Shalika Smith is an unbelievable young lady. The commitment and leadership she has added to our program over the last four years and how’s she grown, not only as a player but also as a person, is terrific. I am so proud of the person she’s become,” Stinson explained.

“Emily Alexander is the ultimate teammate. She’s been clutch for us for so long. On the floor, she has blossomed from just a shooter in the corner to a kid that shoots, and rebounds and guards the other team’s best player. When you talk about team first, that’s Emily Alexander. She’s just a winner.

“On the court, Ashley Smith is instant energy. She’s an A student and there is no doubt in my mind she will be successful. Ashley is a tremendous defender and she understands that’s her role with this team. She’s never complained and she really wants to win.

“I think Hydeia is really starting to blossom this year and I wish we had one more season with her. She has long arms, quick feet and she is an unbelievable defender. She doesn’t have a lot of confidence in her offensive game. However, her coaches and teammates have confidence in her.”
