Not present was teacher Chris Lile. The local business has replaced the former Teacher of the Year award with a new Teachers Reward Program this year. Local store associates voted for schools in Barren and surrounding counties and Hiseville was the winner with the most votes. Principal Steven Murphy drew the names of the 10 teachers at random who were each given a $100 gift card to be used for classroom supplies.

Teachers get money for school supplies

HISEVILLE

Ten Hiseville Elementary School teachers and their students were made very happy Monday morning.

The school was chosen by employees of the Glasgow Walmart to be the first recipient of a new Teachers Reward Program to help offset the rising expense of classroom supplies.

The program replaces the previous Teacher of the Year Award that the business had been presenting to area teachers for several years.

Shift manager Andy Watts and assistant manager Jessica Anderson of the local store were present during the school’s Monday morning assembly to give out 10 gift cards worth $100 each to the lucky teachers whose names were drawn by Principal Steven Murphy.

Anderson said of all the schools nominated from Barren and surrounding counties, Hiseville received the most votes from store associates. They felt Hiseville was the area school that needed the money the most and needed the most help, she said.

“Teachers a lot of the time use their own money for supplies,” Watts said. “We wanted to show in a small way that we appreciate what they do.”

The two Walmart managers also brought gift bags and apples for all the teachers at the school.

The winners of the drawing were Brandie Groce, Debbie Bauer, Leigh Anne Roden, Kenny Carey, Paula Sponhouse, Lisa Adwell, Chris Lile, Tammy Jones, Hope Mires and Stephanie Clemmons.

Last year, a teacher at Hiseville, Julie Hatfield, also won the Teacher of the Year Award.

“This is our second year in a row,” Jones said. “We just want to see how much we can rock.”

Jones, a social studies teacher, said she will use the $100 to purchase supplies for hands-on activities in her classes such as basket making and clay pots.

Murphy, who is in his first year as principal of the school, said he was proud of all the teachers at his school.

“I think it brings great honor to the school,” Murphy said. “We have a very caring staff. It just goes to show these teachers are getting rewarded for all the hard work they put in outside the normal school day.”
