Trojans bash Butler

GLASGOW — Barren County head baseball coach Jonathan Myatt said his Trojans “struggled at the plate throughout” Wednesday’s win over Logan County. Those struggles didn’t repeat themselves on Friday.

Led by a 4-4 three-hit effort from Seth Edwards, the Trojans netted 15 hits to beat Butler County 21-2 in five innings. Edwards also struck out eight in a complete game, while Barren’s offense worked through seven Butler hurlers — none of which logged more than an inning.

“Seth had a really good night hitting the ball for us, and he had a good game on the mound as well,” Myatt said. “We came to play with the idea that we’d hit the ball really well.”

Barren began executing that idea early. The Trojans scored eight runs on five hits and several Butler errors in the first inning. Dillon Clark opened the game by reaching on a shortstop error. A Dakota Pierce infield single moved Clark to second and an error by Butler’s catcher eventually brought him home to provide Barren a 1-0 advantage. Edwards upped that advantage to three after his single to left field scored Pierce and Bart Houchens. Additional runs from Kelly Dillon, Colton Phelps, Cade Lowry, Luke Matthews and Clark and RBIs by Landon Stephens and Clark pushed the Trojan lead to 8-0 after only one inning.

And they didn’t let up in the second. Tyler Hammer, Pierce, Houchens and Dillon knocked in runs, helping Barren nearly double its advantage to 15 as the second inning came to a close.

Butler managed to retire the Trojans in order in the third, but the solace didn’t last. Barren scored six in the fourth inning to seize a 19-run cushion. Butler scored runs in the fourth and fifth frames, but wasn’t able to overcome the Barren blitzkrieg.
