Property taxes due Nov. 20

DANVILLE — The second and final installment of 2008 property taxes payable in ’09 are due by Nov. 20 to the Hendricks County Treasurer’s Office.

The only such notice this year was mailed around Aug. 10. Treasurer Nancy Marsh hopes it’s been enough time for property owners to pay their taxes.

“Of course there’s always people that aren’t happy,” she said, noting that most people eligible for the homestead credit saw their tax rate decrease. However, other property owners saw that burden shift to them. The state also eliminated the Property Tax Replacement Credit, causing business’ taxes to increase.

There are multiple ways property taxes can be paid. One is by regular mail. Payment must be postmarked by Nov. 20 and should be mailed to P.O. Box 6037, Indianapolis, IN 46206-6037.

Payments may also be dropped off in person to the county treasurer’s office in room 215 at the Hendricks County Government Center, 355 S. Washington St., Danville. Extended hours are 8 a.m. to noon Nov. 14 and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 20. A drop box is on the south side of the government building by the double entry doors.

On-time payments with coupons may be made at the following banks: Hendricks County Bank and Trust, First Merchants, First National, M&I, North Salem State Bank, and State Bank of Lizton. Property taxes also can be paid by credit card at the treasurer’s office, online at www.govpaynow.com, or by calling (888) 604-7888.

For those having trouble paying their property taxes, Marsh said she got approval from the Hendricks County Council to offer a payment plan, “so the people who are really in a bind have some options to get it all paid by March 20,” she said. “We just need to get them to call in here.”

Most importantly, Marsh believes the property tax payment schedule is finally back on track. The county assessor has finally completed a required ratio study, which now must be certified by the state.

“Right now we believe it will be May 10 and Nov. 10,” Marsh said of the next property tax installments. “We’re in that process right now, which puts us far ahead of last year. We’re really happy with the catch-up process. We think we’ve made it.”
