Events raise awareness, funds for breast cancer

GLASGOW — In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, two upcoming events are trying to raise awareness and money for organizations that fight breast cancer.

On Friday, Glasgow High School and Metcalfe County High School are joining forces for a “Pink Out” varsity football game at 7 p.m. at Metcalfe. Both schools will sell pink t-shirts and are encouraging their students and fans to fill both sides of the bleachers with pink for breast cancer awareness.

Glasgow tries to have a pink out game every sports season, according to Becky Kingery, assistant athletic director at GHS.

“This year is the first year we’ve teamed up with the other team,” Kingery said.

By having both schools join the pink out, Kingery said she hopes the event will be an even greater success than previous years.

“We’re going to be pink all together,” she said.

Glasgow and Metcalfe will each sell pink t-shirts made by Two Ed’s that will say “Fight to Win” on the front, and one of the school names on the back. Pre-orders will be taken starting Monday for students to buy during lunch, and any member of the community can buy the shirts at Two Ed’s Screen Printing on North Green Street starting Wednesday. Shirts are $10, and Two Ed’s will donate $2 from each shirt to Relay for Life.

It’s for a good cause, Kingery said, and she hopes all Glasgow and Metcalfe fans participate. The football booster club is putting a lot of effort into the project, and with the NFL wearing pink, the football teams are excited to join the cause. It’s a good way for the high schools to get involved in a national health push.

“It just kind of seems like the right thing to do,” Kingery said.

The following night at Metcalfe County High School, women from the community will be coming together for a Girls’ Night Out Pajama Party. Organized by Teresa Kindred of Summer Shade, the event invites women and girls to wear pink pajamas and spend an evening learning about breast cancer, playing games and watching live entertainment.

Kindred developed a strong passion for fighting breast cancer after watching several friends and a cousin struggle with the disease. The pajama party is one way she is raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure during October.

“I want to see a cure to this because I don’t want my daughter or granddaughter to ever go through that,” Kindred said.

Tickets to the event are $4 in advance and $5 at the door, with all proceeds donated to Susan G. Komen for breast cancer research. The event will start at 7 p.m. in the MCHS cafeteria. Nurse practicioner Angela Jessie will be the evening’s guest speaker, and there will be food, games, door prizes and singing and tumbling perfomances.

“I think it should be a fun night,” Kindred said.

Along with putting on the pink pajama party, Kindred is selling pink cupcakes thorughout the month of October, and she said she hopes to raise $2,000 through the two fundraisers. Kindred chose Susan G. Komen specifically to be the recipient of the donations because she said Susan G. Komen devotes more of its funds to breast cancer research. She hopes that these donations will bring cancer research closer to a cure for breast cancer so people like her cousin, who has fought breast cancer three times, will no longer have to face the disease.

“You count the days ’til it’s been five years and you think you’re cancer-free, then wham-o, it hits you again,” Kindred said. “It’s just not fair and I hate it.”

Kindred said she hopes both women and younger girls will attend the event, so all ages can be aware of the risks of breast cancer. They will also honor those they know who have fought breast cancer.

“I think anybody who loves somebody who’s been through this understands,” Kindred said.

For information, community members may call Kindred at (270) 670-6832. Tickets are available at Uptown Designs, McMurtrey Chiropractic or Jessica’s Dance and Tumbling Center.
