Two Barren County High School seniors were honored over the weekend at the state Distinguished Young Women competition – formerly known as Junior Miss, a nonprofit scholarship organization showcasing academics, talent, fitness and self-expression of young women.
At-large programs are available for participants from communities – such as Glasgow and Barren County – that do not have a local competition.
Bailey Birge, daughter of Steve and Charlotte Birge, was chosen to represent Glasgow and was named first runner-up in the competition at the Singletary Center on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington.
“I was in complete shock,” said Birge, who won $3,500 in scholarships. “I did not expect it all. I was so excited.”
Birge plans to attend Belmont University in Nashville and is considering majoring in music business.
“I also won the overall interview and I won the preliminary talent award,” she said.
For her talent entry, she sang “Think of Me” from the musical “The Phantom of the Opera.”
Madison Kerley, daughter of Scott and Dawn Kerley, won $2,300 in scholarships for receiving the Preliminary Interview Award, the Empowering Tomorrow’s Future Award and the overall Scholastic Award. Kerley represented Barren County.
To be considered for the Empowering Tomorrow’s Future Award, Kerley had to write a 250-word essay about a mentor. She chose Dr. Melissa Dennison, a Glasgow pediatrician, because Dennis has focused on being a career professional as well as a devoted mother.
“I would like to be in the medical field as a pediatrician,” said Kerley. “She has also been able to bring herself up in the professional world and be a supportive mother to her children as well.”
Kerley hasn’t chosen a college, but has narrowed her choices to the University of Louisville, Belmont, Western Kentucky University and Vanderbilt University.
“I actually want to major in biology and either neuroscience or psychology, depending on where I go,” Kerley said.
