Fire chief will talk to Rotary

By CLARENCE FREDERICK
For the Daily Times

GLASGOW

Chief Bobby Bunnell, Glasgow Fire Chief, will speak at the next Rotary meeting on Thursday.

John Lawson, vice president, presided at the meeting on Oct. 18, substituting for Jerry Ralston. James Crow gave the devotional. He read a poem entitled “Success.” This consisted of a number of successful stories such as: to leave the world in a better shape then when you entered it.

Terry Durham gave the fellowship report: Doug Isenberg brought as his guest, Kristen Bale, chair of the South Central Center. Some of her staff are speaking today. Benny Dickinson reminded everyone that the Far Off Broadway Players will present their play, “The Foreigner,” at the Plaza this weekend.

Buddy Underwood, sergeant at arms, presented his semi-weekly humorous report. Buddy reported on “Cardboard Box Day.” He read the descriptive labels from a number of body spray bottles, relating each description to a fellow Rotarian. Good report!

Doug Isenberg introduced the program for today. He first remarked about the origin of the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center as “Dreams Really Come True.” The dream originated as an idea in the mind of former first lady of Kentucky, Beula Nunn, the wife of Governor Louie B. Nunn. Her principal assistant was Dr. Christeen Snavely. Both worked tirelessly for many years on the idea, the facility and the format of the museum.

Since their passing, a number of local people have worked for years to continue that dream. Doug introduced the entire staff which is one paid member, Ms. Gayle Berry. Gayle started by telling the audience about one week that is typical of what goes on at the museum. During that typical week, 19 volunteers were present putting in their time doing various assigned jobs totaling 114 hours. Later that week, two new volunteers showed up for work. That week, there were 287 visitors — from England, Tennessee, Missouri, Indiana, Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky and Arizona. In addition, a number of local meetings are conducted at the museum on a scheduled basis.

Next, Gayle introduced Brenda Harbison, who is in charge of exhibits and storage of many artifacts pertaining to memorabilia brought to the museum. Hack Bertram, another speaker, normally takes visitors such as local students on tours. Finally, Kristen Bale spoke about her duties as chair of the Center. The public is encouraged to become members of the museum by paying dues — which are quite small!

And now I leave you with this: “Can’t sleep? Try counting your blessings.”
