Highland Games draw nigh

By GINA KINSLOW
Glasgow Daily Times

GLASGOW The Glasgow Highland Games, which is set for May 29 - June 1, will feature a variety of concerts and musical events.

Kicking off the Games will be the annual Celtic Rock Concert at 8 p.m. on May 29 at Barren River State Resort Park featuring NeedFire, a band that performs a mix of modern rock and traditional Scottish and Irish music.

Based in Texas, NeedFire combines the sounds of a Grade I Highland bagpiper with a Celtic-rock fiddle and a tribal didgeridoo with electric guitars, bass and drums.

“They are tremendous instrumentally,” said Robert Harrison, president of the Games. “They have great vocals. They are contemporary, but still use a lot of traditional Celtic melodies. I think they are probably one of the top three Celtic bands in North America right now.”

Also performing will be Father, Son and Friends, a band that has been performing at the Games since 1991, and the local rock group Burly Cruz, a band that was formed while its members were still in high school.

“We are merely five country gentlemen from Barren County, Kentucky, who now reside in the cities of Bowling Green, Georgetown, Glasgow and Owensboro, Kentucky, while we attend separate colleges,” reads the band’s blog on its MySpace page.

Unlike NeedFire and Father, Son and Friends, Burly Cruz is not a Celtic band. The band is typically known for its country rock genre of music.

“We may not knock you out of your seat with crunching distortion, but we will undoubtedly get you on your feet by playing your favorite song,” the band’s MySpace blog said.

Members of Burly Cruz are: Adam Glover, Andy Joe Moore, Brandon Hodges and Trevor Riddle.

The Celtic Rock Concert will be followed by the ceilidh on May 30 at 7:30 p.m. beneath a large tent next to the Louie B. Nunn Lodge at the Barren River Lake State Park Resort.

A ceilidh is a traditional Scottish event that features music as well as storytelling. Performing at this year’s ceilidh will be balladeer Alex Beaton, bagpiper Karen Brumley, bagpiper Skip Cleavinger, comedians/musicians Father, Son and Friends, comedian Jeff Fleming, balladeer Colin Grant-Adams, Celtic fiddlers The Grimes Girls and Celtic rock band NeedFire.

“I think this year’s ceilidh will be the best we’ve ever had,” Harrison said, and that’s because of the combination of music styles that will be featured during the event.

The ceilidh will feature some new performers this year including Beaton, Cleavinger and The Grimes Sisters.

Beaton is a Scottish balladeer, while Cleavinger is a Scottish Highland bagpiper. The Grimes Girls, Natalie and Kathleen, are known for their renditions of “Draggin’ the Bow” and “The Orange Blossom Special” on the fiddle. They began performing the Celtic fiddle in September 2007 at the Columbus Scottish Festival in Columbus, Ind.

Harrison described The Grimes Sisters as being “tremendous.”

“I would guess they would really, really be in the big time within a year or two,” he said.

Another rock concert, Rockin’ Under the Stars, will take place May 31 on St. Andrews Field featuring Father, Son and Friends, NeedFire and Burly Cruz.
