Henry finds calling after losing job

Custom engraver Earl Henry has to exercise great caution coupled with exact precision while he works. Unlike most modern day engravers, Earl does his work by hand. “I don’t use a machine to do my engraving,” Earl said. “What I use is a high-powered pneumatic hand tool that’s powered by air pressure.”
Earl uses tiny diamond and carbide bits to chisel out the fine details in a wide range of materials.
“Some of the things I do engraving on are glass, crystal, porcelain, stone and china,” Earl said.
He doesn’t have a preferred medium when it comes to engraving. “I enjoy all of the mediums,” Earl said. “I like them for their differences.”
There are many variations even amongst the wood that he engraves. “Dark woods are usually very compact, and light woods have a loser grain,” Earl said. “It takes time to learn the difference.”
It takes both practice and skill to know what to expect of each medium.
“Of course, the more you practice the better you get,” Earl said. “But there has to be a real interest there to acquire the skills it takes. Some people pick it up and others can’t.”
Earl’s interest in the art of engraving took hold over 14 years ago in his hometown in Pennsylvania.
“I got laid off from work and I started making candy at home,” he said. “I really enjoyed working with my hands. Something about it really appealed to me. After that, I thought I’d try my hand at engraving.”
Earl’s first engraving experience left him feeling fulfilled.
“After a few tries it was just like picking up a pencil or pen,” he added.
After developing an interest and honing in on his skill, he discovered that he was a prime candidate for the work. “I’m the fifth generation in my family to exhibit artistic abilities,” Earl said. Many of His family members have worked in the arts as well as art education.
While still living in Pennsylvania, Earl decided to use his talents to help create a one-of-a-kind gift for his wife on Valentine’s Day.
“I engraved a perfume bottle for her that said ‘I love you, Happy Valentine’s Day,’” he said.
The gift was a success and his wife suggested that he contact perfume companies and offer his services.
Earl did, and Calvin Klein took an interest in what he was doing. Before long, Earl was setting up shop in local malls during the holiday season.
“One day an Arabic man came in and I asked him if he wanted for me to write the words in his language,” Earl said. “He didn’t think that I could do that. I told him to write it down. If I could watch him write it, then I could do it.”
The gentleman was so pleased with his custom engraving work that he brought back five of his family members.
Earl now does engraving work in many foreign languages. The languages added a whole new dimension to the work that he already loved, making it more dear to his heart and the hearts of those he does engravings for.
“To see someone get ecstatic over something that you made for them, and know that it’s important to them is great,” Earl said. “It’s a wonderful feeling.”
