Teacher makes music with paint
AN ABSTRACT CONCEPT

GLASGOW —
The art of Glasgow artist Todd Woodward is now on display at the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce.
Woodward teaches art and humanities at Highland Elementary and serves as director for Glasgow High School’s choir. He is also the choir director at First United Methodist Church, but when he has time he likes to paint.
His exhibit features between 48 to 50 pieces.
“I’ve been working on these particular pieces for about three years,” he said. “Many of them have sold and they already have owners, but they have allowed me to bring them back and put them on exhibit.”
But that doesn’t mean none of his paintings in the exhibit are for sale. They are.
“I do have plenty of work still for sale,” he said.
Woodward describes himself as a folk artist.
“I have no formal training. I’m self-taught,” he said. “I like to look at different artists ‘work and then kind of pattern myself after them. I particularly like the master artist Van Gogh and a contemporary artist Ed Sandoval.”
Woodward uses a lot of color in his work and his paintings feature a lot of texture. The medium he chooses to work with most is high- gloss acrylic paint.
“I like it because it looks like oil, but to get the ability to paint quickly over another section you don’t have to wait as long for it to dry,” he said.
Inspiration for his work comes from his students at Highland Elementary. He often paints certain things to help explain a certain type of painting, such as a portrait, a landscape, an abstract or a nonobjective piece of artwork.
Woodward loves teaching art as much he likes creating it. His favorite thing about teaching art, he said, “is seeing the expression on the children’s faces when they think, ‘I can’t do that,’ but then given the opportunity, they can create some beautiful pieces of art and they surprise themselves.”
Woodward’s artwork will be on display through the end of the month. A reception in his honor will be at the chamber on May 22 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
