WHITTAKER, Kiwanis Club For the Daily Times GLASGOW — The March 12 program speaker for the Glasgow Kiwanis Club was Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton. He shared with club members the outstanding youth work of the Kentucky Sheriff’s Boys and Girls Ranch.
The Sheriff’s Association operates a 50-acre lakefront ranch at Gilbertsville. During the summer, approximately 500 children each week attend the camp. The opportunity is available for children of low-income families. The sheriff’s office works with school counselors and other community leaders to secure recommendations. Residents of Glasgow and Barren County are eligible; usually about 8 to 15 children from the county attend the July camp. “Last year when Dan Blair prepared to bring the kids home, they all wanted to stay another week,” Eaton said. “It is a great time for them to swim, shoot archery and participate in a variety of camp activities. They make friends and establish pen pals.” Sheriff Eaton told about one child who attended and later moved to another county. “The boy wrote us to request a letter about the camp be sent to his county sheriff.” During the summer, Sheriff Eaton makes an effort to send two to three deputies to the camp to work as chaperones. Eaton was elected to his first term as Barren County Sheriff in 2006. He was soon appointed to serve on the ranch committee. Funding for the ranch has grown from $300 to $50,000. Members of the Glasgow Kiwanis Club voted to request the club board of directors to consider a contribution to the ranch. Sheriff Eaton issued a warning about people receiving phone calls and e-mails soliciting contributions from the U.S. Deputy Sheriff’s Association. “This so-called organization is not connected with our office or the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association,” Eaton stated. “We don’t solicit money.” Sheriff Eaton also requested photos and information of former employees in the sheriff’s office as part of a memorabilia wall. “I’m very proud of the staff and deputies,” Eaton said. “They are excellent workers and make me look good. We are grateful to serve the community and welcome your suggestions and help.”
