HORSE CAVE — A benefit concert featuring local rock/blues band Rufus Huff for Kentucky Repertory Theatre is set for April 21 at 7 p.m. at the theater.
The event will not only help generate funds for the theater, which is suffering a budgetary shortfall due to low ticket sales and a drop in donations, but also celebrate the recent release of the band’s self-titled CD on Zoho Records.
“People can come and enjoy really great music from local artists and support the theater at the same time,” said Libby Ellis, marketing director for theater.
The theater needs to raise $350,000 before it starts its 2009 season this summer, or face closing its doors. As of last week, the theater lacked $70,000 to reach its fundraising goal.
The theater launched a fundraising campaign earlier this year titled “Save a Kentucky Treasure” to generate funds. Many groups and individuals answered the theater’s call for funding by making donations. Rufus Huff was among those who agreed to lend a hand.
“One hundred percent of the doors proceeds go directly to the theater,” said Greg Martin, guitarist. “We’re all avid supporters of the theater.”
Theater officials are pleased that the band agreed to help with the fundraising efforts.
“I’m really excited because I hear they are great and we’ve had a lot of people asking about the concert. They are very excited about that group,” said Mary Margaret Villines, development director for the theater.
The concert comes one week after the band’s official record release party, which is set for April 14 at 6:30 p.m. at The Great Escape in Bowling Green.
“We’ll also be performing tunes form the CD ‘live’ in the store that evening,” Martin said. “We’ll also be premiering the music video ‘13 Daze’ at The Great Escape next week. This was shot by a Canadian Production Company in Bowling Green last December.”
The band is named for two local blues performers, Rufus and Luther Huff. Joining Martin in the band are Dean Smith, Chris Hardesty and Jarrod England.
Rufus Huff fans can catch the band on April 15 at Ear X-Tacy Records in Louisville at 6 p.m. EST, Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar in Louisville on April 16 at 9 p.m. EST and at D93 Block Party on April 17 at 5:30 p.m. CST.
Concert tickets are $10. All seating is reserved. For more information or for ticket reservations contact the theater’s box office at (800) 342-2177.
