Kentucky Rep Theatre earns award

HORSE CAVE — Kentucky Repertory Theatre received word this week it has earned the Governor’s Award in the Arts by the Kentucky Arts Council.

“The award is given to those who are a testimony to the value of the arts in Kentucky,” a press release from Gov. Steve Beshear stated. “They actively demonstrate how the arts are a tool for building vibrant communities, enhancing economic development, creating successful learning strategies and enriching individuals’ lives.”

Officials with the theater will be honored during a ceremony Oct. 1 in the Capitol Rotunda.

“This is obviously a great honor to have,” said Sam Dickinson, president of the theater’s board of directors. “The Kentucky Arts Council and the governor recognize the theater for its long-standing success in the community and what it’s done for not only the arts, but for education as well. The theater serves a vital role in the introduction to the arts to their students at lots of different levels. Having the award is recognition of the success the theater has of being a part of that process.”

Such awards are given in nine categories. Kentucky Repertory Theatre received the award in the community service category.

“This will let people all over the state know what’s going on here,” said Robert Brock, artistic director of the theater. “I feel like the honor is long overdue. The theater has been doing great things for a long, long time.”

The theater has been nominated for the award twice before. While the theater has never had the honor bestowed upon it, the former artistic director, Warren Hammack, received a lifetime achievement award in the arts several years ago.

The theater reaches out to the community through a variety of classes in its education program and also offers acting and playwriting workshops. The theater’s company also goes to area schools to conduct workshops.

A video featuring the theater and its company was recently filmed and will be shown prior to the awards ceremony, he said.
