Kentucky Repertory Theater is kicking off its summer season of productions with the musical, “Cotton Patch Gospel.”
The production, which opened on the theater’s main stage on May 25, is the story of the Book of Matthew set in modern-day Georgia.
Written by Tom Key and Russell Trez, with music and lyrics written by Harry Chapin, the musical is based on the book, “The Cotton Patch Version of Matthew and John,” by Clarence Jordan.
“It is essentially a one-man show with one man playing 28 roles and a bluegrass band who steps in as characters,” said Ken Hailey, producing artistic consultant for the theater. “So, it is the gospel story. It just happens to be in a modern text with this bluegrass regional music. It’s also the last thing that Harry Chapin wrote.”
Starring in the musical is Jo Nowacki, who previously appeared in Neil Simon’s “The Good Doctor” at the theater.
