Kentucky Theatre for Youth launches collaborative project

HORSE CAVE

Kentucky Theatre for Youth is embarking on a new endeavor, the first of its kind in Kentucky, to bring together students from across the state into one ensemble theatrical experience. The Young Performers Collaborative Project involves close to 60 students from three different schools and counties. The schools participating are Allen County-Scottsville, Edmonson and Larue counties.

At no cost to the school, KTY brought an opportunity for students to train with theatre professionals from KRT, learn first-hand to analyze the script, arts terminology, and a chance to work cooperatively with students from differing socio-economic and geographic areas throughout Kentucky, who might otherwise have not had the opportunity to meet or work together.

The play chosen for this year’s program is Thornton Wilder’s, “Our Town.” The play is divided into three acts. Each school is assigned one act to present. Beginning in August, KRT professionals went into the school each week to rehearse and prepare students for the performance. A liaison chosen from school faculty worked with KRT staff to oversee rehearsals, sponsor school involvement, and to encourage students to work creatively through exercises and analysis.

KTY furnished all materials, costumes, set, and performance space at no cost. By working directly with theatre professionals, both students and faculty learned about the process of play production, character development, and how creative dramatics can be used as a teaching tool. Students developed discipline and team building skills through collaboration in an ensemble environment. By schools working directly with arts organizations such as KTY, KRT hopes to promote stewardship and appreciation of the theatre arts through personal experience.

The project will culminate with two Saturday public performances on Oct. 17 at 2 and 7 p.m. CDT. Adult tickets are $10 and student tickets are $7. Seating is general admission. For more information please contact the KRT box office at (800) 342-2177.
