ENTERTAINMENT BRIEFS: FOBP ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ auditions announced

Staff reports
Glasgow Daily Times

GLASGOW

The Far Off Broadway Players will hold auditions for “Arsenic and Old Lace” on July 9 and July 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and again on July 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Plaza Theatre.

There are roles for 11 men of various ages and female roles for two older women and one younger woman in the play. Directed by Charley Goodman, this classic comedy centers around the eccentric Brewster family of Brooklyn, New York. Show dates for the production will be Oct. 16-18 at the Plaza Theatre.

Advanced preparation for the audition is not necessary. Excerpts from the play will be available for reading at the time of audition. Anyone who would like to read the script ahead of time may go to Garmon and Goodman law office at 139 N. Public Square. Scripts may be checked out for a one week time period. No former acting experience is required.

Several crew members will also be selected for those who would like to be involved with the production behind the scenes. There are positions for a stage manager, set designer and construction technicians, props designer, lighting and sound designers, costume designer, house manager, and publicity director. Anyone with experience in any of these areas or if anyone would like to become involved, they may attend an audition to apply.

If there is anyone who cannot attend one of the audition times, but would like to audition for a role or be considered for a crew member position or would like more information, call Charley Goodman at 651-6366 or 651-8812.

Visitors welcome free tours at Mammoth Cave

MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK — Mammoth Cave National Park will offer the Discovery and Mammoth Passage cave tours free of charge on July 18-19, and Aug. 15-16 as a gesture by the National Park Service to help citizens enjoy the outdoors. The tours were previously done in June.

“We consider the weekend a great success,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed. “The purpose was to give folks a break in these tough economic times. Some came out specifically because of the free tours, others who were already here added a free tour to their visit. Both Saturday and Sunday showed significant increases over the number of people who visited on the same weekend last year.”

On June 20-21, 7,151 people toured Mammoth Cave, compared to 5,157 people on the same weekend in 2008, a 28 percent increase. The park ran the self-guided Discovery tour through the busiest part of the day, and then added extra Mammoth Passage tours to ensure all visitors would have an opportunity to go on one of the free tours.

“One woman told us the tours added to a cheap summer get-a-way she planned for her grandchildren,” said Mike Adams, Mammoth Cave’s chief of interpretation. “She said they came to this area to use discounted tickets at one attraction, then came to Mammoth Cave for the free tours. We hope others will follow her example when we offer the free tours again July 18-19 and Aug. 15-16.”

Campfire programs come to Mammoth Cave National Park

MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK —Mammoth Cave National Park will be offering campfire programs throughout the summer at the amphitheater near the Mammoth Cave Hotel.

Each program begins at 8:15 p.m.
