Edwards arranges business, family Wins award for her efforts By BRAD DICKERSON Glasgow Daily Times GLASGOW — What was Julie Edwards’ reaction to being named Florist Mom of the Year? She accused the messenger of lying.
“Cathy (Doty, Edwards’ sister) took the call and I heard her say, ‘Do you want to tell her or do you want me to tell her?’” Edwards said. “The lady said, ‘Whatever you want me to do.’ Cathy said, ‘Well, let me put you on speaker phone and you tell her.’ “I kept telling that woman, I said, ‘You’re lying.’” The woman was not lying and Edwards, who runs Glasgow’s Greer’s Florist alongside her sister, was named Florist Mom of the Year. There was one catch, though. “The woman, first thing she told me was, “You didn’t win nationally,’” Edwards said. “They pick one from every state and then one won overall.” Edwards was nominated for the award, sponsored by the wire service Teleflora, by her sister Cathy via a letter to the selection committee. “Julie knows the true meaning of hard work, family and the balance of it all,” Cathy stated in the letter. “She is my sister, my friend and my business partner.” Greer’s Florist has been in Edwards’ family for more than 50 years. It was started by her grandmother, Pearl Greer, in 1956 on Mother’s Day. Eventually, Edwards’ mother, Barren County Judge-Executive Davie Greer, took over the business upon Pearl’s retirement. One of the perks of a family-run floral business has been providing Edwards a “flexible” environment to both work and raise a family. “We could leave if we needed to go to school to a play or a party or something like that,” said Edwards, who has spent 26 years as a full-time employee. “We’ve got great people that work with us. I couldn’t have worked in a better place to have been raising kids.” Courtney Edwards, 22, definitely believes her mom is worthy of recognition, saying that Julie is taking care of not only the flowers for her July 19 wedding, but “everything.” “She’s taken it all into her hands, but I trust her judgment,” Courtney said. As she continues with her daily floral duties, Edwards has also been on the lookout for an evasive package — the Blackberry she is set to receive as recognition for her selection as mom of the year. On June 11, it still had not arrived.
