9:40 MORNING UPDATE: Deputy released from UofL; suspect arrested

GLASGOW — A Glasgow man was arrested Monday night after leading Barren County deputy sheriffs in a pursuit on Jack Brown Road that resulted in a collision, injuring one of the deputies.

Deputy David Houchens, 33, was traveling south on Oil Well Road when he lost control of his 2006 Chevy Impala and struck a tree. Houchens was on his way to assist another deputy involved in the pursuit, said Trooper Jonathan Biven, public affairs officer for the Kentucky State Police in Bowling Green.

I believe he is doing very well,” Barren County Sheriff Kent Keen said. “I'm pretty sure they have released him. He has a fractured wrist and is basically sore and banged up.”

Houchens was traveling south on Jack Brown Road when the crash occurred.

He had just passed the Skaggs Creek Bridge on Oil Well Road, came into a curve, and lost control of his vehicle causing it to leave the left side of the road and hit a tree head on,” Biven said.

Houchens was flown to the University of Louisville Medical Center, but was released from the hospital Tuesday morning.

Biven, who arrived on the wreck shortly after it occurred, said Houchens was lucky he didn't sustain more serious injuries in the crash.

Looking at the car, with the way it looked, somebody was with him in that car last night,” he said. “Because when I pulled up, I thought we had lost an officer. That just goes to prove that seat belts and air bags save lives.”

The man arrested Monday night by deputies was Michael Paul Harvey, 56, who was charged with first-degree alluding, first-degree fleeing or evading (motor vehicle), first-degree wanton endangerment ( police officer), DUI with aggravated circumstances, resisting arrest, reckless driving, disregarding stop sign, speeding 26 mph over speed limit, failure to give improper signal and reckless driving.
