UPDATE: Tornado watch issued for area

GLASGOW — 6:25 p.m. UPDATE:

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for an area that includes Barren, Warren, Simpson, Allen, Hart, Metcalfe and Monroe counties. The watch is in effect until 11 p.m.

11: 50 a.m UPDATE:

Monroe County basketball games at Warren East scheduled for tonight have been postponed until Friday. Also, Warren Central and South Warren have announced cancelation of games scheduled for tonight.


11:30 a.m. UPDATE:

The National Weather Service says there is a moderate risk for severe weather this afternoon in an area that includes Barren County.

Based on maps from NWS, a line of storms is expected to move through southcentral Kentucky after noon today.

"Strong/damaging winds will be the main threat, but a few tornadoes will also be possible," according to the NWS."Thunderstorms will develop this afternoon across western portions of the slight and moderate risk area and track eastward this evening and overnight."

Some preparations are being made for the possiblity of severe weather.

East Barren Volunteer Fire Department said on Facebook its storm shelter behind the fire station at 761 Hollis Thomas Road will be open this afternoon.

Also, Barren County Schools announced on Facebook and Twitter that after-school bus transportation for 21st Century program students is canceled.

"Barren County 21st Century will have afterschool programming and licensed childcare with parent pick up only ... at the elementary level," the statement said.
