3:45 AFTERNOON UPDATE: Jury says Chesher guilty

EDMONTON —

A Metcalfe County jury rejected William “Bill” Chesher's claim he fatally shot Ronnie Hiser on June 4 in self defense and convicted him, but it chose a lesser charge than murder after three hours of deliberation Thursday.

The charges on which jurors found him guilty are first-degree manslaughter, with a potential sentence range of 10 to 20 years, and tampering with physical evidence, which can bring a sentence of one to five years.

The sentences the jury agreed to recommend after 15 more minutes of deliberation were in the middle of the ranges – 15 years for the manslaughter charge and 3 years on the tampering charge.

A presentence investigation is to be completed before the final sentencing, which is scheduled for April 22.
