Barren County On Trial

Eaton will resign July 31

GLASGOW — Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton is resigning from office the day before he is scheduled to be sentenced on two felony counts of witness tampering. The announcement was made in a 20-page sentencing memorandum filed by his attorney Monday in U.S. District Court.

Eaton, who has served as sheriff since 2007, was convicted of two counts of witness tampering at the end of a nine-day federal trial in May. He was acquitted of six other counts, including the underlying charge of deprivation of rights through use of excessive force. According to Kentucky law, Eaton does not have to resign his office until he has exhausted all appeals options. He is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 1, so cannot file an appeal until after the sentencing. However, according to attorney J. Guthrie True, when his motion for judgment of acquittal was denied last week, Eaton decided it was time to step down.

“It was his decision,” True said. “I think it’s the right decision.”
