Barren County Sheriff Eaton says goodbye to staff

Resignation effective 11:59 p.m. Wednesday

Glasgow Daily Times

Barren County Sheriff Chris Eaton, as of Thursday, is the former sheriff, but there was no word Wednesday evening as to who would be named to finish out his term that ends in 2014.

The resignation was expected because court documents – filed last week in the federal case in which he was convicted in May of two felony counts of witness tampering – cited a July 31 departure as a reason the court should consider leniency in his Thursday sentencing, but Eaton had not made it official until Wednesday. According to Kentucky law, Eaton does not have to resign his office until he has exhausted all appeals options, but according to his attorney, J. Guthrie True, the sheriff made the decision after a motion for judgment for acquittal was denied.

“I'll be tendering my resignation today as sheriff of Barren County, effective 11:59 p.m. tonight, July 31, 2013,” Eaton said minutes before going into a staff meeting at 4:30 p.m. – when BCSO closes to the public – that he called “personal and private” and was closed to media.
