Students Ham it Up

SCOTTSVILLE — Eight Barren County 4-Hers traveled to the Clifty Farm Country Meats plant in Allen County Thursday to join other 4-Hers from area counties in  preparing their country hams for entry in the Kentucky State Fair.

All that was left for them to do was to smear their hams with vegetable oil, which is done to bring out the color in the meat.

Their visit to the plant was the culmination of a six-month process.

Judging of the country hams will take place on opening day of the state fair on Aug. 16.

Tim Berry, plant manager, assisted the 4-Hers on Thursday in selecting one of two country hams for entry in the state fair.

Helping with the 4-H Country Ham Project is a joy for him, he said.

“A lot of kids this age, they really don't know what a country ham is other than it comes between a biscuit from Dairy Queen or McDonalds,” Berry said. “We want them to learn what a country ham is and promote the product just a little bit more.”

Barren County 4-Hers took part in the project for a variety of reasons, but most did it at the urging of their parents.
