Mum’s the word By GINA KINSLOW Glasgow Daily Times CAVE CITY — At the intersection of U.S. 31E and Ky. 70 in Cave City is a small yellow sign telling motorists which road they should take to get to Royndal Doyle’s mum farm.
The farm is located about two miles out Ky. 70 east. It’s easy to spot: There are mums all over the place. Jack London of Cave City stopped by recently to buy mums. It was his first visit to Doyle’s farm. “I drove by and saw all the colors,” he said. London is personally acquainted with Doyle, but said he had not bought flowers from him until recently. Doyle ,74, has been growing mums for many years. “I started out with 500 mums 25 years ago,” he said. “We got up to 8,000, but now we’ve cut back to 4,000.” He reduced the number for a couple reasons, poor health being one. Doyle is a two-time cancer survivor. He raised his baseball cap to show a shock of white hair and said, “This is my third crop of hair.” “I thank the good Lord,” he said. “I’m very fortunate. He has something else He wants me to do.” Another reason for cutting back is the actual cost to raise the flowers. “Fertilizer has doubled and so has everything else.” When Doyle began growing mums, he used to dig them and put them in pots to sell. “Now we grow them in pots,” he said.
