After receiving numerous complaints about thistles, the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service in Hart County is working with various state and local agencies to get the word out about how to control the weeds.

“We’re just trying to make sure that landowners know they have a responsibility and try to show them how they can control noxious weeds,” said Chris Clark, agriculture extension agent for Hart County. “A lot of the complaints we have received are that the thistles are seeding out and blowing over on other landowners’ property.”

Clark, along with Kevin Ferguson and John Caffey with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, recently spoke to Hart County magistrates about what role the fiscal court can play in making sure landowners assume responsibility.

According to Clark, the fiscal court can petition KDA to come in and control the thistle problem if landowners refuse to do anything on their own.

Clark said the Cooperative Extension Service in Hart County is trying to mitigate the complaints without having to take such extreme measures.

KDA conducts demonstration sprays annually, and Clark said those efforts have been targeted toward educating landowners on how to control thistles. The demonstration sprays are typically done in the spring and in the fall. KDA provides the spray and the landowner provides the manpower, he said.

Landowners are urged to mow the thistles they have now and contact the Extension Service in Hart County about getting their name put on a waiting list for a demonstration spray in the fall.

“We can’t do everybody that asks for that demonstration,” Clark said. “So, we are going to try to scatter those in areas where there are real problems.”

There are two types of thistles that can be found in the southcentral Kentucky area — Canadian Thistle and Nodding Thistle.

“Approximately 95 percent of the thistles we deal with are the Nodding Thistle,” Clark said.

Those are characterized by a large purple bloom that nods in the wind. The Canadian Thistle also flowers, but its bloom is not as prominent.

“We’ve had a lot of issues with thistles this year, probably more than normal,” Clark said.

Last year’s drought is one reason why there are more thistles this year.

“That’s probably one contributing factor,” Clark said.

He explained that seeds need sunlight in order to germinate.
