Horticulture was a mystery to Seth Forman before Barren County High School teacher Joe Michael Moore introduced him to it.

In fact, whenever the BCHS junior had an agriculture question, he knew Moore could help him find the answer.

“If I didn’t know something, I could always go to him and ask him,” Forman,18, said. “It ain’t going to be the same without him.”

After 31 years of teaching, Moore has decided to retire at the end of the school year.

“I think you know when your time’s up and you’ve got to make that decision at some point in time,” Moore said.“I farm myself and I want to be able to enjoy a few years of just farming and do what I need to do.”

Moore, a lifelong farmer, raises beef cattle, hogs and corn.He also operates a sausage company, Moore’s Country Sausage, year-round.

Although farming and agriculture are his passions, Moore’s career at BCHS actually began with him teaching Vietnam War veterans for the first eight years. During the next 12, he taught science and biology before moving to the ag department.

“I don’t have to look in a book and read about agriculture,” Moore said. “I was born on a farm and I’ve farmed all my life. It’s just what I do and I love teaching it.”

In addition to his own farm operation, Moore will continue his involvement in the local agriculture community, spe-cifically as a member of the Barren County Cattleman’s Association.

Organizations like the cattleman’s association and the Future Farmers of America (FFA) fill Moore with a great deal of pride.

He recalled earlier FFA chapters at BCHS were comprised of all male members.

“This year, we have six girl officers,” he said. “It’s just come so far.”

In thinking about three decades of teaching, if there is one thing Moore looks back on with fondness, it is the timid freshmen who, as juniors and seniors, go on to win agriculture contests and become officers in organizations like the FFA.

“I enjoy that success that I watch them (have) as they develop their leadership skills,” he said.
